A friend of mine, who is also a staff interpreter at the Supreme Court, is one of them. He left his job and moved to another city to learn French in order to increase his language proficiency. He wanted to apply his skills as a Spanish interpreter and discover new opportunities. He worked hard for the test and came to know that not everything can be spelled out in a new language. At that point, he gets to know how hard his project was because he had to learn everything from scratch. This is because various Spanish forums available on social media do not offer anything obvious for LOTS (Languages Other Than Spanish) interpreters. No proper interpreting exercises are available. Certain tips will help you out if you are also facing this situation. Let us have a look.

Create Network

This is an effective way to start your new journey as a LOTS (Language other than Spanish) interpreter. You can join various Facebook pages, which will help you in establishing a connection with other interpreters working in your language. You can also form a connection with interpreters by attending the conference and taking various classes as desired. You can initiate and create the group if none is available. Overall, networking can help to study, discuss, and share resources.

Study Material Compilation

Many people memorize vocabulary and perform simulated exercises of interpreting. This will help in improving your technique. In the case of LOTS interpreters, only English material will be required. Collect study material available online or take classes. If looking for language-neutral materials, find a study partner. You both can translate for each other and do interesting exercises.

Dictionaries Compilation

A good reference guide is essential for an interpreter. Research is key, talk to colleagues you found online and compare your notes. Buy a bilingual dictionary and collect the glossaries that properly explain the terms in a source as well as target languages. However, it is difficult to find specific legal dictionaries but you can search US websites and the websites of the origin country. Some bilingual websites are also available.

Advice

Do not interpret YouTube or TV unless the script is available in front of you. Analyze your recording to know your mistakes. This will improve your skills. Do not collect excessive material, know what is necessary and stick to that. Do not try to study every glossary or exercise that is on way; otherwise, you will end up frustrated and overwhelmed.

Many interpreters want to learn new languages to open a world of opportunities for them.
